What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living is an opportunity for individuals with a disability to have funded programs of support to live in an environment of their choice, either as an individual or with a small group of others, with a provision of care with daily living that suits their needs.

SIL services are tailored to each individual and can include:

  • 24/7 support with daily living including personal care
  • Assistance with cooking, cleaning, and laundry
  • Support to complete grocery shopping and to catch public transport
  • Support to be involved in community participation
  • Support to develop independence in a social environment

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will provide allocated funding for SIL in the provision of an approved NDIS plan.

The SIL funding is for the provision of the supports only and a client will be expected to contribute to the living environment to cover costs which would normally be expected in everyday life.  Depending on the home environment will determine the level of contribution required.  This contribution will be used for such expenses as:

  • Utilities (water, gas, electricity and landline phone)
  • Internet and Streaming services
  • Household maintenance and repairs
  • Cleaning and waste disposal
  • Groceries and food
  • Gardening and furniture (depending on the house)
